Lesson8: Pearl Care and Maintenance

1. Avoid Contact with Chemicals
Pearls are primarily composed of calcium carbonate, making them highly sensitive to acidic and alkaline substances. Avoid contact with cosmetics, perfumes, hairsprays, detergents, body wash, and hand soap, as these chemicals can cause the surface of the pearls to corrode and discolor.
2. Avoid Sunlight and High Temperatures
Long-term exposure to intense sunlight or high temperatures can dehydrate pearls, causing their luster to diminish. When storing, choose a cool, ventilated place and avoid direct sunlight or placing pearls near heat sources.
3. Maintain Proper Humidity
Pearls contain a small amount of water (approximately 4%) and need a certain level of humidity to retain their luster. In dry environments, pearls may lose moisture. It is recommended to store pearls in a moisture-controlled jewelry box or periodically wrap them in a slightly damp soft cloth to maintain adequate moisture levels.
4. Keep Away from Kitchen Fumes
The surface of pearls has many tiny pores that can easily absorb oil and other substances from kitchen fumes, causing pearls to yellow over time. Remove pearl jewelry while cooking and avoid exposing them to smoke and grease.
5. Clean Properly
When cleaning pearls, use a special pearl cleaning solution or lukewarm soapy water (mild, non-bleaching detergent). Gently wipe the pearl surface with a soft cloth soaked in the solution. Rinse with clean, soft water and pat dry with a soft cloth. Do not soak pearls for long periods or use abrasive materials like brushes, as this can damage their surface.
6. Store Separately
Pearls are relatively soft. When stored with harder gemstones (like diamonds, rubies, or sapphires) or metal jewelry, they may get scratched due to friction. Always store pearls separately in a soft pouch or jewelry box to prevent them from rubbing against other items.
7. Regular Inspection
Regularly inspect the silk threads or metal clasps of pearl necklaces or earrings. Replace them promptly if there are signs of wear or loosening to avoid losing your pearls.
8. Wear Appropriately
While pearls are suitable for everyday wear, they should be removed during housework, sports, or swimming to prevent them from being subjected to impact, pulling, or contact with chlorinated pool water.
